Of course Celtic fans went crazy and instantly made the tweet viral, funny and annoying at the same time from the mega bucks broadcaster. People just lost all common sense and forgot that Cavani is one of the worlds best forwards at the moment and also earn a hefty wage packet of around £300K per week and Celtic would have no chance of attracting him to Glasgow. Cavani will probably start against PSG because that was likely always the plan. The plan was probably to start Martial and Rashford up top on Sunday, and bring Cavani on if needed for the last 25. After learning that viewers had taken his use of “negrito” — a term which has long been viewed as a slippery slope across different countries and cultures — as a potentially racist insult, Cavani deleted the post from his account which has more than 7.8 million followers.

Cavani has since issued said the message was “intended as an affectionate greeting to a friend, thanking him for congratulations after the game. The last thing I wanted to do was cause offence to anyone. I am completely opposed to racism and deleted the message as soon as it was explained that it can be interpreted differently. I would like to sincerely apologize for this.”

Manchester United issued this statement: “It is clear to us that there was absolutely no malicious intent behind Edinson’s message and he deleted it as soon as he was informed that it could be misconstrued. Edinson has issued an apology for any unintended offence caused. Manchester United and all of our players are fully committed to the fight against racism.”

According to the BBC, Cavani has explained that he intended for the term to be used as a term of endearment toward the person whose post he re-shared to his much larger audience.

The term used by Edinson Cavani is the same one that landed former Liverpool star Luis Suarez, a fellow Uruguayan, in trouble after he was reported to the FA after he said it to then-Man United defender Patrice Evra in 2011.

Manchester United are reported to have heard and accepted Cavani’s explanation of his use of the term.

Although it is widely used as a term of endearment in South America and the Caribbean, the word is regarded in England, as well as within parts of the Afro Uruguayan community, as carrying racial connotations, prompting the FA to investigate Cavani's post.

The Uruguay international, who has been enrolled in an education programme, will miss games against Aston Villa, Manchester City and Watford.

Sources have told ESPN that United have asked the FA to use the fine to fund anti-racism projects.

A statement released by the club on Thursday read: 'As he has stated, Edinson Cavani wasn't aware that his words could have been misconstrued and he sincerely apologised for the post and to anyone who was offended.

'Despite his honest belief that he was simply sending an affectionate thank you in response to a congratulatory message from a close friend, he chose not to contest the charge out of respect for, and solidarity with, the FA and the fight against racism in football.

'While it is clear that context and intent are key factors, we note that the independent Regulatory Commission was required to impose a minimum three-game suspension.

'The club trusts that the independent Regulatory Commission will make it clear in its written reasons that Edinson Cavani is not a racist, nor was there any racist intent in relation to his post.'

A statement issued by the FA read: 'Edinson Cavani has been suspended for three games, fined £100,000 and must complete face-to-face education after admitting a charge for a breach of FA Rule E3 in relation to a social media post on Sunday Nov. 29 2020.

'A comment posted on the Manchester United FC striker's Instagram page was insulting, abusive, improper and brought the game into disrepute contrary to FA Rule E3.1. The post also constitutes an 'aggravated breach,' which is defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included reference, whether express or implied, to colour and/or race and/or ethnic origin.

'An independent Regulatory Commission was appointed to decide the sanction and its written reasons will be published in due course.'

Cavani said that while he did not agree with the governing body's assessment of his comment, his heart was at peace and he posted an apology on social media late on Thursday.

'I do not want to extend much in this uncomfortable moment,' Cavani wrote on Instagram. 'I want to share with you that I accept the disciplinary sanction knowing that I am foreign to English language customs, but I do not share the point of view.

'I apologise if I offended someone with an expression of affection towards a friend, nothing further in my intention. Those who know me know that my effort always seeks the simplest joy and friendship!

'I appreciate the countless expressions of support and affection. My heart is at peace because I know that I always expressed myself with affection according to my culture and way of life. I send you a sincere hug.'
